Fireworks. Compositing tutorial
Have you ever struggled with unrealisticly looking fireworks in your animations? Solution find and we have a short tutorial for you.
April 7, 2026
In this Tuesday Tip, we will learn a proper way of combining stock footage of fireworks with a 3D render. This is quite common in large-scale projects—such as stadium presentations—where the scene is set in the late hours of the day, and the culmination of the animation features a beautiful fireworks display.
However, when there’s no time or ability to simulate this effect in tools like tyFlow, we need an alternative approach—compositing. That’s where this tutorial becomes extremely useful. With simple fireworks footage, you can achieve a highly realistic result by professionally integrating it into your rendered sequence.

What You’ll Learn
- How to use Shader node in Blackmagic Fusion Studio
- How to build a complex mask for realistic light bounce from the firework.
- Using Cryptomatte node for perfect masking
- Boosting glowing effect with the xGlow node.
Where This Technique Is Useful
When time or budget is limited for simulating a fireworks effect, we can still achieve realism using stock footage and a little compositing trick..
